Each horse progresses in its own time and through a self revealing natural process governed by the sum of the mutual wisdom at hand. Fear from anysource is the greatest obstacle.
The use of opposition as a source of control has limited value. Opposition always creates its own resistances. As a method of control, it is relatively easily learned because in follows human instinct. There is a wide range of skill levels but very few are skilled enough to be able to make the system work. When it does work, it works badly.
Harmony is far more effective; it is at play when the aids are used in conjunction with the natural movements of the horse. It is more difficult to learn because one must be both mindful and effective in control in ways which are counter to human instincts. It however always works. Every horse reaches its highest level.
Horse or human wisdom are not far from each other. One must learn how to evoke and awaken the horse's wisdom first. To achieve this is to be actively kind, gentle and regular internally and externally. Such actions engender trust and linking which becomes habitual.
Opposition and harmony as systems of control do not really co-mingle well with each other and in the end the horse must be the one chosen but when and how that occurs is about how the individual horse person sees the process. People spend lifetimes in one camp or the other and some spend their life struggling in the middle.
To spend a life in service to another is an honor and a principle of sanity. We have chosen the horse as that path. So it is that as we mature we progress to a dressage based in the harmony of the horse and eventually oppositional systems fall to the wayside. Harmony as a method is the source of our kindness and joy. - Craig Steven"
