"Think carefully on this: In modern riding the horse is considered to be rear driven. The popular fantasy is that the rider's legs equal the horse's rear legs. Good story, even sounds logical but it is simply not true.

When the legs of the rider are used with even the slightest of force, they actually disconnect the horse's forehand from the haunches. Most horse's are actually front end driven. They literally pull the rear along by working on their shoulders.

Lowering the head and over flexion cause the horse to put weight on the forehand further disconnecting the horse. The favored position of "long and low" is the maximum on the forehand you can make horse without speed.

Adding the rider's legs to this insanity, actually hollows half the horse by bending/breaking it in the middle. This is just one of the reasons why what are called dressage horses break down in the rear.

Motion in the horse or in any animal including humans comes from the core and specifically starts in the spinal column and not the legs. One never attempts to drive the rear of the horse into the forehand because even if it works, which it rarely does, it breaks the horse down.

The true collection does not come from the horse's body but from the horse's mind. It cannot be contrived or forced. It is a gift freely given by a horse who is respected and treated right by a rider who knows the power of kindness.

The goal, if we are to use that term, can only be achieved by the free consent of the horse who is straightness and by not bending the horse. Calm and forward have no value on a horse broken in the middle.

Forward must come after the calm alignment of the forehand and haunch which arises from the educated hand that knows how to find and ask for straight. These are unpopular truths.

Now, each "rider," can now find the reasons why what I have just said is wrong and why they cannot find their way to high level riding. For every broken horse, there is a human with an excuse. An animal can do all the upper level work in the field but cannot do simple walk, trot and canter under as so-called "rider."

Think carefully. Because everyone does something stupid does not make it any less stupid. Correctness has never been a popularity contest. Self carriage and lightness are not an option in training. It is training."
