"The aids act in 4 ways; they harmonize, energize, magnetize or block. They always bring a result; they communicate. Even when it appears that nothing has occurred energy is never lost. What is communicated is the result of training two minds; horse and human.
Four steps: 1.Connect. 2. Feel. 3. Direct 4.Release.
Step three is tricky in the sense that 2 things are possible at that point; the energy is either directed upward which is listening or downward which is asking. There is and must always be a balance between the upward and downward flow of energy.
The answer is liked, disliked or ignored. What determines which of the three answers one gets is determined by cadence, timing, focus and balance (mental, emotional and physical). These are the reactions which are possible and habits and training are what determines the result.
Without calm and/or in the presence of aggression, confusion and fear are what are communicated. Confidence arises from gentleness and kindness and it lets the horse go beyond any hesitation and builds trust. Trust is what enable the horse and human to step beyond their neurotic patterns. This is what good dressage communicates. - Craig"
